Which is Best for Measuring Manuka Honey?
The Manuka Honey marketplace is crowded with many different scales and numbers all presented by different honey companies to help sell their products.
Today I want to mention the two most common quality scales and how they compare, MGO vs UMF®
Most genuine high-grade Manuka Honey from New Zealand like Manuka South® includes a UMF® rating on the label.
Not everyone is allowed to use the UMF® trademark on their product. It’s use is restricted only to authorised license holders.
Even then, they are only allowed to use it after complying with a strict quality regime of sampling as testing at approved internationally accredited laboratories.
UMF® Grading System
The UMF® grading system has two components which are expressed on any UMF® honey product.
1. UMF® Number
2. Label Claim
The label claim that it is genuine Manuka honey.
Only genuine UMF® Manuka Honey, with the UMF® trademark is guaranteed to be highly rated. The UMF® trademark is your guarantee of quality and is licensed by the UMF® Honey Association of New Zealand.
Some Manuka Honey companies instead use an MG or MGO rating (methylglyoxal) to rate the honey on the label.
They do this so that they can use an unregulated and uncertified scale to sell their product.
Honey products without a UMF® or MG/MGO rating are generally low-grade honey without the beneficial characteristics that have made premium Manuka Honey so much in demand.
